| Presentation : |
| Blue King Brown is an Australian
reggae band. This is the interview with co-founder
and bass player : Carlo Santone. |
 |
| Interview : |
| G, B! : When and how
the band it was formed ? |
Natalie (lead singer)
and I have played music together for years, we’ve played in a percussion group
called SKIN for the past 4 or 5 years but have always
had a passion for melody and song writing. We moved
to melbourne in may 2004 from Byron Bay to find some
new band members and basically form the band. We went
out every night for the first few months checking out
players, venues etc and over about a 6 month period
we managed to hook up with this crew we’re now
playing with. We started jamming on a regular basis
and hit the road for the first time in January 2005,
we just released our first recording together in September
2005 and have been touring consistently since.

G, B! : What were the
musical experiments of each musician
before this meeting? |
| We are a five piece band, 4 out of the
5 come from a very percussive background, this comes
through strongly in our music. Members have also played
in Hip Hop, dub, funk, latin, percussion, soul, rock
and jazz bands. |
| G, B! : How
would you define your music, in 4 words? |
| ROOTS, SOUL, GROOVE, PERCUSSION, that just about sums
it up. |
| G, B! : Is
Australian reggae is important ? |
| Reggae has become very
popular over here in the past few years, Australia
is developing it’s own reggae sound as are many
other countries, Australian reggae is important but
I think bands need to stay original and true to themselves
or Australia in some way with their reggae otherwise
there’s originality. |
| G, B! : Which are your principal
influences? |
| There is so many but Fela Kuti has been a big one,
Marley of course, Zeppelin, Ernest Ranglin and heaps
of world music, to much to list. |
| G, B! : Which are your future
musical projects ? |
| We’ll always have our percussion band happening
on the side but at the moment BLUE KING BROWN is our
principal focus, we’ll be recording a full album
next year and touring as much as possible. |
| G, B! : Would you have
a small joke ? |
Sure, I have a big Joke.
The majority of our country voted in a Prime Minister
who has no respect for the indigenous people of this
land, he sends our brothers and sisters to fight
unjust Wars, he has no respect or sympathy for refugees
in need, he continues to screw over the whole country
time and time again, but he keeps getting voted back
in? Now that’s a joke.
|
| G, B! : A small world of
end ? |
Thanks and respect,
Carlo Santone
